Fought in Russia, Hungary, Austria Knights Cross Surrendered to the British and Soviets in May 1945. After successfully holding the line over the winter of 1941-42, Wiking was ordered to retake Rostov-on-Don and advance into the Caucasus, securing the region's vital oilfields.

The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was one of the elite Panzer divisions of the thirty eight Waffen SS divisions. It was recruited from foreign volunteers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, the Netherlands and Belgium under the command of German officers.

The SS Totenkopf and the Wiking divisions formed the 4th Panzer-Corps commanded by SS-Gruppenfüh­rer Herbert Gille. This corps was placed 30 miles northeast of Warsaw. Corps troops comprised one assault gun brigade of two battalions totaling six batteries, and one battalion of light GHQ artillery.
