The aspect with which I struggle most is how I feel about the relationship between Aiko and Punpun. As the story is from the perspective of Punpun I feel it's the case of Punpun hanging a lot of his baggage through life on the idealised version of Aiko who existed in his head from the age of 7. He never truly really knew her.

Adding on to that, Punpun had an extremely cynical view of the world, and wanted Aiko to understand and share that view. He both loved Aiko, but also detested her and blamed her for his situation in life. Aiko knew this, which probably led Aiko to have a major change in her personality, and as such, those changes were reflected in those finale.

A theme in Oyasumi Punpun is living being harder than dying. Aiko, like Punpun, is incredibly idealistic. She expects a small kid to keep a promise even though it's unrealistic (two kids crossing Japan to Kagoshima). She sees life as all or nothing. She wants that perfect love and understanding. However, life is messy.

I love Aiko Tanaka and truly felt bad for her, and her situation. I guess like Aiko, I am also an idealist, and I like that she waited for Punpun after all those years. I think she definitely had some mental illness and serious trauma, but I think ultimately she just wanted to have a happy relationship with someone and desired a deep connection.
